Understanding Your Dry Eye Situation

While dry eyes may seem like a normal part of life, you shouldn’t ignore consistent discomfort. Our team is always excited to help patients relieve their symptoms, but first, we must identify the source of your dry eyes. We can take a detailed look at your eyes to diagnose the cause of your symptoms and get to the root of why you’re experiencing dry eyes.

We understand how irritating dry eyes can be, and we’re here to help. Visit InVision Eyecare, and we can help determine the cause of your dry eye symptoms before finding an effective treatment option tailored to you.

What Is Dry Eye?

Dry eye is a condition where your tears cannot effectively lubricate your eyes. This problem typically occurs due to your body not producing enough tears or having poor-quality tears, leading to faster evaporation. Your eyes become dry when complications arise in your tear film.

Your tear film has 3 layers that work together: mucus, water, and oil. The mucus layer of the tear film keeps your tears on the eye’s surface, the water layer keeps the eye hydrated and protected, and the oily layer helps prevent tears from evaporating too quickly.

Common Symptoms of Dry Eye

Dry eyes can lead to several uncomfortable symptoms, including:

  • A stinging, burning, scratching sensation
  • Blurry vision
  • Eye fatigue
  • Eye redness
  • Foreign object sensation
  • Light sensitivity
  • Stringy mucus in or around the eyes
  • Watery eyes

How We Diagnose Dry Eye

Diagnosing dry eye involves taking a comprehensive look at your eyes during an eye exam. We learn about your medical history and symptoms before completing several diagnostic tests.

Our team can measure your tear volume, evaluate the quality of your tears, and assess your eyes to help determine the cause of your symptoms. After finding the root cause of your symptoms, we can recommend a treatment plan to help relieve your dry eyes.

What Can Dry Eye Testing Reveal?

Dry eye symptoms can come from several different factors, including tear quality, tear production, inflammation, meibomian gland dysfunction, contact lens wear, screen use, and environmental triggers. Dry eye testing helps our Saskatoon optometrists look more closely at what may be causing your irritation, watering, burning, or fluctuating vision.

At InVision Eyecare, your dry eye assessment may include a detailed review of your symptoms, eye health, tear film, eyelids, and meibomian glands. Understanding the cause of your dry eye helps us recommend treatment options that are better suited to your eyes and lifestyle.
